The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired defenseman Jack Rathbone and forward Karel Plasek from the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday in a trade for defenseman Mark Friedman and forward Ty Glover.

"I would like to thank Jack for all the time he spent with our organization and always pushing hard when competing for a spot," Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said. "It has been a tough couple of years for him and this will give him a fresh start.

"The two players coming back in this trade will add to our depth as we continue to look at ways to improve our organization."

The Colorado Avalanche acquired defenseman Caleb Jones from the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday for forward Callahan Burke.

Jones recorded a career-high 16 points (four goals, 12 assists) and averaged 19:13 of ice time in 73 games last season with the Chicago Blackhawks. He signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with the Hurricanes on Aug. 10 before clearing waivers last week.

The Vancouver Canucks obtained forward Sam Lafferty from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday for a 2024 fifth-round pick.

Lafferty, 28, can be an unrestricted free agent after this season.

"As we work towards becoming a tougher team to play against, Sam will add some grit and sandpaper to our lineup," Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said in a statement. "We also like the way he skates and can back players off with his speed. He is a good addition to our forward group and has shown he can also use his speed effectively in a penalty-killing role."
